Friedman’s Ghost

Milton Friedman said it loud and clear

Free capitalism from all its chains

And true freedom will thus appear

As all good gifts from heaven rain.

While in theory this might be so

In practice complications arise

As lowly peasants come to know

Their hopes’ rapid demise

For the system to work as all can see

Harsh measures are required

As this system really works the best

With workers enslaved and dog tired.

Friedman’s nirvana is really simple

Eliminate government (except the troops)

As they are needed to keep order

All other duties are privatized

State assets sold at bargain rates.

Such measures can only be pursued

When the army is there to coerce

Threaten, torture or disappear

And foster a climate of fear

Of instant death or one delayed

Or bodies falling from the skies and

Corpses by the roadside lying

For all to see plain as day

The moral clearly apparent:

Don’t fuck with us or here’s

Your fate—think long and hard

Before you act for retribution

Is swift and sure

A visitation in the night

The falcon swoops and grabs it prey

And whisks him stealthily away

To torture chambers with bloody floors

And impenetrable doors

And let the masses congregate out

On the street in ones and twos

The guanaco spits the crowd disperses

Don’t let a critical mass of dissent arise

Paralyze with fear stifle all dissent

But you see nothing here is new

For this is what for 500 years

Has been done starting with Ferdinand and

Isabella

Grab the resources using slaves

Maximize profits no thought to

The masses.

For they are stupid and they

Need the moral probity

On them unleashed

To keep them docile and paralyzed.

In Argentina Friedman’s Xeroxed Brick served as the plan for a new society.  Ford Motor Company supplied Green Falcons to the military for use of the secret police.  The first order was to assassinate the labor leaders in the Ford Motor plant. Water cannons  (guanacos spit) were used for crowd control.  Dissidents were chained together and pushed out of helicopters like sausage links…)   See Naomi Klein:  Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism.
