Starting 1436 catholic popes issued may Papal Bulls (Doctrines sealed with string on lead balls) giving Christian explorers the right to dominate savages, Pagans and Saracens, to enslave and to kill them and to expropriate their properties. These religious dicta provided the justification for Columbus and other conquistadors to claim the terra nullis, to plunder native gold and silver and to enslave and commit genocide against non-Christian indigenous people. This despite these lands had been occupied for centuries. David E Stannard’s American Holocaust documents the huge numbers of indigenous peoples killed and the amazing civilizations destroyed. Johnson and leases v. M’Kintosh (1823, Justice John Marshall) confirmed the Papal Bull of 1452 saying the Christians had the right of Discovery/Domination and by virtue of it passing from the Christian explorers. This ruling gave all the Indian Lands to the US Government, and that the Indians had no property rights, only the right of occupancy, since they were ignorant heathens and savages and an inferior race. These lands were given by divine right. The Americans were therefore analogous to the Old Testament biblical chosen people in the promised land. This was the basis for settler colonialism, the enslavement of Africans by the Portuguese, Spanish in the Americas and Caribbean. And, slavery in the United States.
This is the root cause of colonialism and the basis for capitalism and underlies our foreign policy where we as the exceptional people have justified overthrowing and controlling countless governments and murdering people around the globe.

These authors document the mayhem we have unleashed on the world.
But the root cause lies in the 15th century Papal Bulls.
